Augmentative & alternative communication

Everyone has something to say.

AEIOU and Kammunicate are for people who find speech hard, and for the people beside them. They're warm, unhurried, and completely private: everything happens on the device, there are no accounts to create, and nothing about you is ever collected. Communication tools should earn trust, not ask for it.

AEIOU

Communication that feels like you.

AEIOU is an intelligent communication keyboard for people who can't rely on their voice, and sometimes can't rely on a touchscreen either. Tap, blink or scan to build a sentence and have it spoken aloud, in a voice that can be your own. It's free, and every part of it runs on your device.

The next letter, before you reach for it.

Typing letter by letter is slow, so AEIOU quietly speeds it up. Quick Letters reorder live at the top of the keyboard, learning from how you actually type, so the letter you want ends up under your finger more often. All of that learning happens on the device: no cloud round-trips, no dictionary of you on somebody's server.

And because whole thoughts beat single letters, time-aware phrases use Apple's on-device language model to surface the right thing for the moment: "Good morning" at breakfast, "How are you?" when a conversation starts, "Happy Sunday!" on, well, Sunday. Pin your own phrases, the things only you would say, and they stay one tap away, always.

Speak with a blink.

For the moments (or the lives) where tapping isn't an option, AEIOU can be driven entirely by your eyes. Calibrate once, and a single deliberate blink selects the highlighted cell, using ARKit face tracking on the front TrueDepth camera. Reflex blinks are filtered out automatically, so the keyboard never mistakes a sneeze for a sentence.

Prefer switch-style input? A scanning mode steps through the keys for you. However you select, camera frames never leave the device: AEIOU reads just two eye-closure values per frame and throws them away immediately.

Your voice, kept.

On iOS 17 and later, record a Personal Voice once in your iPhone's settings and AEIOU will speak in it. For someone gradually losing their speech, that's not a feature, it's a keepsake.

Every sentence you speak lands in Recents, ready to say again in seconds: hello, thank you, water please. There's a conversation partner mode too: a grid of one-tap responses for the person beside you, so the back-and-forth stays quick in both directions. And your pinned phrases follow you between iPhone and iPad through Apple's encrypted iCloud sync.

Kammunicate

Communication without the pressure.

Kammunicate is a calm, shared AAC app built around one simple idea: lay an iPad flat on the table between two people. The screen divides in two, your half faces you, your partner's half faces them. Nobody reads upside-down, nobody passes the iPad back and forth. You make a message, send it across, and they reply. A conversation, built together.

One iPad. Two sides.

Kammunicate is made for anyone whose voice isn't always the easiest route: someone living with cerebral palsy, stroke, ALS, Parkinson's, apraxia or autism, someone with a temporary speech limitation, or anyone who finds it easier to show a thought than say it out loud.

It's just as much for the person beside them. The canvas splits down the middle: one half belongs to the person expressing what they need, the other, turned to face them, to the person supporting them. There's even a two-player mode with separate roles, so each side sees the cards that make sense for them, including more than 80 specialised carer responses.

However it comes out easiest.

  • Draw & writeA freehand canvas built on PencilKit. Sketch an idea with a finger or Apple Pencil, or combine drawings with cards for messages words can't manage.
  • 450+ communication cardsSixteen colour-coded categories, from basic needs and feelings to humour, opinions and "that's not what I meant".
  • The Smart DockPredicts which cards you'll need before you search, from the conversation, the time of day and what's helped before. Works from day one.
  • Stickers & photosAdd feeling with a sticker, or show exactly what you mean with a photo. Make your own cards, categories and stickers too.
  • Safety, alwaysEmergency cards such as "Emergency", "Call 999" and "I can't breathe" stay available at all times. Safety-critical, by design.
  • HistoryEvery exchange is kept in order with timestamps, so you can look back over what was said together.

Calm by design.

Nothing in Kammunicate is in a hurry. There are no countdown timers, no scores keeping track of how quickly you reply, no streaks to protect. It is deliberately unhurried, so there's room to think and space to try again.

Easy Read mode makes everything larger and simpler, and now supports scheduling: set messages to appear at breakfast, mealtimes or appointments, and Kammunicate handles the timing. Gentle background sounds (rainfall, ocean waves, soft piano, or your own Apple Music) can settle the mood if you'd like them.

Quietly intelligent. Entirely on the iPad.

Kammunicate's conversation engine understands more than needs and requests: it follows commentary, humour, opinions and social closeness, so when someone says "I missed you", the suggested replies respond with warmth. It notices which cards help and offers them sooner, recognises handwriting and drawings to suggest the matching card, and knows when a conversation has naturally ended.

All of that machine learning runs on the iPad using Apple's own frameworks. Nothing is sent away to be analysed. And when a carer can't be in the room, the companion app Kampanion can pair nearby so messages arrive on their phone, device to device, no internet needed.

It learns what helps, and keeps it on the device.
