AEIOU support
AEIOU is a free AAC keyboard you can tap, blink or scan. It has no account, makes no network requests, and works completely offline. Below are the questions that come up most.
Getting started
Is AEIOU really free?
Yes. AEIOU is free, with no in-app purchases, no subscription and no adverts.
What do I need for blink selection?
Blink selection uses the front TrueDepth camera, so it needs an iPhone X or later, or a supported iPad Pro. It's optional: the whole keyboard works fully by touch, and a scanning mode is available for switch-style input.
Blinks aren't being detected reliably
Run the calibration again from Settings inside AEIOU, ideally with your face evenly lit and the device roughly at eye level. Calibration tunes AEIOU to your natural blink, and reflex blinks are filtered out automatically. Glasses are usually fine; strong backlighting is the most common culprit.
Voices and phrases
How do I make AEIOU speak in my own voice?
On iOS 17 or later, record a Personal Voice in iOS Settings → Accessibility → Personal Voice, and allow apps to use it. AEIOU will then speak in your voice. Personal Voice requires a device with the Neural Engine.
Where do my pinned phrases live?
On your device, and (if you use iCloud) in Apple's encrypted key-value store, so they follow you between your iPhone and iPad. AEIOU has no servers and cannot see them.
Can the person I'm talking with reply quickly?
Yes: conversation partner mode shows a grid of one-tap responses for the person beside you, so the back-and-forth stays quick in both directions.
Privacy
Does the camera footage go anywhere?
No. Blink detection reads two eye-openness numbers per frame on the device and discards them immediately. No image, video or face data is ever stored or transmitted. AEIOU makes no network requests of any kind. The full detail is in the AEIOU privacy policy.
